Charles H. Hardy born PA and son Charles F. Hardy born FL in Jackson County, Georgia

Charles H. Hardy born probably between 1761 and 1765 in PA and lived in Pennsylvania in 1811 when his son Joseph W. Hardy was born. His middle name was probably Howard because a Howard Hardy appears in a year when Charles Hardy is missing from the census.

I find only one Charles Hardy in Pennsylvania (Lack, Mifflin County, PA) who matches in the 1810 census. This isn't proof that it is he.

In 1808 Charles H. Hardy was in Florida, or at least his wife was in Florida when she had Charles F. Hardy born 14 Dec 1808 in Florida Death: 8 Aug 1882 in Georgia Burial: Mizpah Presbyterian Church Cemetery, near Center, Ga.. Probably due to Indian hostilities in that time, they left Florida and traveled back to Pennsylvania. Between 1811 and 1820 they settled in Jackson Co, Georgia. Did he receive land for Revolutionary service? Was he the Charles Hardy who was a Methodist preacher in Florida in 1827?

Charles H.Hardy did receive land in Troup Co GA- and seems he has connections to the Howard and Jones families.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gbonner/moore.html
Land Lot #259: Only the far northwest corner of this land lot approaches the Chattahoochie River. It was originally won by Charles H. Hardy of Jackson County in the 1827 Land Lottery. From thence it passed to Hardy Howard (see Deed Book "A", page 294), then to Hardy Jones (see Deed Book "B", 382), then to Hardy Jones, Jr. (see deed book "B", page 484), then to Samuel Akers, who seemed to have bought a lot of land in the surrounding area. I wonder if all these instances of the name "Hardy" are coincidental. In any case, Land Lot #301 is directly west of Land Lot #259. Land Lot #258: This fractional lot was purchased by Richard M. Ward of Upson County in the 1827 Land Lottery. It appears to have been sold to Joseph POST (probably Joseph Martin Post, died 15 JUN 1847) in 1834 (142 acres).

Looking for Charles F. Hardy in Jackson Co GA, I also find a J.W. Hardy - (Joseph) was born in PA and in 1880, Charles F. says his father was born in PA. I suspect his brother is J. W. Hardy in Jackson Co GA in 1870 and that the mother and father moved back and forth between Florida and PA during the events leading up to the War of 1812 and the Indiana hostilities - but anyway they both have that PA connection. In 1840 I found them together as neighbors.

Joseph W. has a second wife in 1870 who is younger age 39. Joseph W. Hardy's first wife would be found in 1860 and her name is ELiza. His second wife is probably the Nancy found in 1870 and their daughter is Alice Hardy age 3. Barbery is his daughter.

I am searching for ancestors and family of PRESTON HARDY, b. abt 1777 in VA, d. after 1860 in Jackson County, GA. He is shown in the (Jackson County) Census of 1820, 1830,1840,1850, and 1860. His children included Elizabeth, Benjamin, Martha, and Mary A(nn). Who was his wife? Was he married more than once? Did he also have a son named William B. Hardy? A son named Stephen Coleman Hardy?
Who were his parents? Was he related to Charles H. Hardy or Lewis (Louis) Hardy who were of similar age and origin, and lived in Jackson County at the same time?

Dr. William W. Rich, of Center, is a native of Union county, Ga.  For the past 20 years or more he has practiced his profession where he now resides.  Two years ago he took a trip to Texas with a view of moving there.  He came back better satisfied with old Jackson county than ever before.  The doctor is an alumnus of the Eclectic Medical College of Georgia.  He has been twice married, both his wives being sisters to Samuel H. Hardy and the late J. W. Hardy, of Clarksboro.

Here is a letter written connecting Charles H. and Preston Hardy in that they were in the same county early on.

I have investigated the family of Preston Hardy at considerable length as a part of my search for the ancestors of Stephen Coleman Hardy, reportedly born 15 Aug 1813 in Georgia, died 1 Nov 1875 in Troup County Georgia.
Coleman Hardy's family (descendants of his daughter Sarah Elizabeth, who married Henry Drew Floyd of Troup County) have in their possession a letter dated August 11, 1858, written by Elizabeth Hardy of Madison County, Ga. to William B. Hardy at Wisdom's Store, Harris County, Georgia.
Based upon the contents of the letter, Elizabeth is clearly the daughter of Preston Hardy, and William is judged to be William Brantley Hardy, her brother. Descendants of William Brantley Hardy are known.

Studying the Federal Census' of Jackson County, Ga., 1820 ... 1850, several observations can be made:

1820: Charles Hardy, Louis Hardy, and Preston Hardy are enumerated.

1830: Howard Hardy is added. His dob. appears to be 1771 ...1780, the same as Preston and Lewis. Charles dob. appears to be 1761 ... 1770.
Preston's family includes 6 males in addition to Preston, and 5 females in addition to the person thought to be his wife.

1840: We now find Charles, Lewis and Preston, plus Josiah, Joseph W. and Charles F. Hardy. Howard is "gone." Josiah, mentioned in Elizabeth's letter is a likely son of Preston. Joseph W. and Charles F. are likely sons of Charles. (Charles F. Hardy is the Charles Hardy showing a birth place of Florida- not his father Charles H.)

1850: Preston's enumerated family includes (himself), Betsy (Elizabeth), Benjamin, Martha, and Mary A. His wife is apparently deceased.
Lewis Hardy's enumerated family includes (himself), his wife Temperance, and a daughter Nancy.
Charles H. Hardy is not enumerated- he is likely deceased.
A (person named) Rose Hardy, born about 1792 in North Carolina appears, along with Martha E. L. Hardy, born about 1833 in Georgia.

1860: Charles F. and Joseph W. both continue to appear, along with their growing families.
Benjamin Hardy, Preston's son is listed as Head of Household; Preston is listed at age 84, along with Elizabeth and Mary A.
Ruphus and his wife Eliza A. appear in this census, as do Josiah, his wife Mary and sons Francis M. and William D.A.
Lewis Hardy, his wife Temperance and daughter Nancy are not enumerated. Lewis is likely deceased, and the whereabouts of his family is not known.
A Richard J. Hardy, born abt. 1836 in Georgia, his wife Louisa H. and daughter Louisa A. are enumerated (by Charles F. Hardy!).

Now, returning to Elizabeth's letter of 1858, the above census listings of Preston Hardy's family name many of his children. However, her letter provides additional insight:
-"As for John (an older brother born 1805 ..1810?), we don't know much about him. He never comes to see father at all. He lives within two miles of us."
-"Joseph and Nancy, living at Jefferson. They were well, all but the baby".
-"Josiah is living not far from Harris."
-"Large Rufus is living with Thomas Nix at the old Tom C. Bearny? place".
-"Rufus and Eliza were here last Sunday."
-"Benjamin rented ground of cousin Nathaniel Hicks."
-"Our dear sister Martha, we never expect to see her in this life".
The letter is signed on behalf of Maryann Hardy, Preston Hardy, Benjamin Hardy, and Elizabeth Hardy.

Look in all these counties when looking for ancestors in Jackson Co. Georgia-

In 1801 a new county was developed around the new college town of Athens, Jackson Co, GA and Jackson lost territory to the new Clarke County. The county seat was moved to an old Indian village called Thomocoggan, a location with ample water supply from Curry Creek and four large springs. In 1804, the city was renamed Jefferson. Jackson lost more territory in 1811 in the creation of Madison County, in 1818 in the creation of Walton,Gwinnett, and Hall counties, in 1858 in the creation of Banks County, and in 1914 in the creation of Barrow County.
